English Week: days 3 and 4

Yesterday and today was the time for story-telling sessions. We had two special guests for the occasion: Kirsten Tinkler, who told our younger students some horror stories about the city of London and who even used a disguise for the event; she also played the violin for the students as part of her performance! And Jamie Keddie, the famous author and public speaker, who told some stories from You Tube and got the 3rd and 4th year students really engaged with them! They were both excellent! While all this was taking place in the School Hall, the text book author Paul Kelly was quizzing the Batxillerat students: they had to answer questions from 5 different sections in small groups. There was even a small prize for the winners! All in all, these last two days have been a big success as well!

Scottish Dancing with David Vivanco!

David came all the way from Scotland to Barcelona to share the beauty of his culture with us during our school's English week!
We enjoyed the different types of sportive dancing, the mesmerizing sounds of the Scottish bagpipe, the magical musical spoons, and the delightful stories of the men who wear kilts!

Getting ready for the ENGLISH WEEK!

At last! Next week is the big week: THE ENGLISH WEEK! We are all excited about it and we are decorating the school. Each level has been working on a different English speaking country: 1ESO has specialised in the United Kingdom, the second-year-students have been working on Canada, 3ESO has been dealing with Australia and 4ESO with the USA. Finally, the 1BAT students have focused on New Zealand. What have they been doing? They have been searching for information about the country, giving a class presentation, filming a video and making posters. Everything is ready now for next week. And what have we got for next week? Workshops on Scottish dancing and bagpipe playing, story-telling sessions, quizzes, conferences and pop/rock Karaoke concerts!!! We can't wait for the big week to start!!!

Composition Time

Our 3ESO students visited Catalunya Radio station and one of them, Inés, wrote a report on the event:

A day at Catalunya Radio

On Thursday 12th of November the students of 3rd ESO went to Catalunya Radio to find out how the radio works.

We went by bus, taking the H8. We arrived there at 10:15h. First of all, the students ate our breakfast outside the building.

Once we were inside, the first thing we did was go through security control.

Then we entered a reception where a girl explained to them what the visit was going to be about and gave them a brief introduction.

Then we visited the facilities of the radio station, where there were people working. We saw many studios and some people recording a radio program.

The girl explained the characteristics of the studios: We have two windows and double glazing to soundproof the room and the floor is covered with a carpet to improve the sound quality. Some of the rooms have double doors for the same reason.

Once the visit finished, some students had the oportunity to record a radio program like  professionals.

Finally, we returned to the school having spent a great day.

   

Príncep de Girona students display their Halloween style... and their work!

The students of 4th ESO have written some horror stories and we want to share one of them with you.

HALLOWEEN STORY by Luís Ferreiro

  

It all happened many years ago in a remote town in the Catalan mountains. The town was little more than a small square with a church, a park, a prison and a school.

It was the morning of Halloween. When the class was preparing the Halloween decorations and listening to the radio, the weather forecast was interrupted by a piece of news.

The news warned that a murderer had escaped from the local prison and he was very dangerous. The teachers were advised to lock the doors and the windows of the classroom.

The teacher told the class to stay in calm and she went around closing every window. A girl asked to her if she could go to the toilet, but the teacher didn’t want it. The girl insisted and finally the teacher relented. To know that it was the girl coming back, she would do “tap, tap, scratch, scratch”.

After a few minutes a sound was heard on the door. It was: “tap, tap, scratch, scratch”. The teacher opened the door and there she saw a big man with a knife on his left hand and the head of the girl on his right hand.

The teacher ran away and she could escape, but when the police arrived there the man was in the middle of the class and the floor and the walls were covered of blood.

Nowadays the teacher is in a psychiatric centre and she always does: “tap, tap, scratch, scratch”.

A new academic year has started and, with it, a couple of new faces have arrived in the English Department. We are very pleased to be able to give a warm welcome to the two new English teachers, Fatima Trisan and Marta Palau. No doubt they will enjoy working with the students at Príncep de Girona School and they will help them to progress with their English. A big welcome from everybody!
